How to Maximize Sales on Small Business Saturday: Marketing Checklist

Small Business Saturday is more than just a shopping day. It’s a chance for local businesses to capture attention, deepen community connections, and turn holiday buzz into lasting customer relationships. With the right strategy (and the right sales platform), you can transform this one-day event into a powerful growth opportunity.

This guide walks you through a marketing checklist built to help you stand out, from quick social media and email campaigns that drive awareness, to limited-time offers and in-store exclusives that boost sales. You’ll also learn how to partner with nearby businesses for cross-promotion and how AI personalization can help tailor your ads for maximum engagement.

1. Get your business listings in shape.

Before running any promotion, ensure shoppers can easily find you. Go beyond just verifying your hours and address. Update your business listings with clear calls-to-action, such as “Call Now,” “Book Online,” or “Shop Small This Saturday.” Upload new product photos, highlight your most giftable items or seasonal services, and refresh your descriptions to include holiday-related keywords like “local gifts” or “holiday deals near me.”

Thryv’s Listings Management tool automatically updates your information across Google, Yelp, Facebook, and 60+ other platforms from one place. That means no manual edits, no inconsistencies, and no missed opportunities. Accurate, eye-catching listings help you appear higher in search results and convert local browsers into in-store or online buyers.

2. Plan quick awareness campaigns.

With so many holiday promotions competing for attention, timing is everything. Launch your awareness push with quick social media posts and email campaigns early in the week leading up to Small Business Saturday, then build momentum as the weekend approaches. Start with a teaser email or social post that hints at upcoming deals, followed by daily countdowns or limited previews. Highlight your best-sellers, new arrivals, or exclusive Saturday-only offers using photos and videos.

Pair your social content with a short, targeted email campaign – —one to announce, one to remind, and one to thank. Thryv’s Marketing Center lets you schedule posts and emails across all your channels at once and track open rates and engagement without switching tools. You’ll save hours while keeping your brand visible everywhere your customers scroll.

3. Offer limited-time perks and in-store exclusives.

Urgency drives action. Promote “Saturday-only” deals that give shoppers a reason to stop by or book now. You could offer early-bird discounts for the first 20 customers, a free add-on service, or a “buy one, get one 50% off” incentive. Utilize in-store signage and QR codes to direct customers to your online store or loyalty program. The goal is to make your promotions feel special, time-sensitive, and easy to redeem.

If you’re managing multiple offers, Thryv’s Sales Platform helps you organize them all, from scheduling discounts and tracking redemptions to collecting payments seamlessly. You can even create online appointments or reserve spots for in-store events, all while syncing data automatically with your CRM.

4. Use AI personalization to boost engagement.

Generic messages don’t stand out during the holidays. Leverage AI personalization to make every communication feel tailored and relevant. Segment your audience by interest, purchase history, or engagement level. For instance, send first-time shoppers a “Welcome to Small Business Saturday” coupon, and reward loyal customers with an exclusive VIP offer. You can even use dynamic email content to display products or services based on browsing behavior.

Thryv’s AI tools make this process simple. They can automatically generate message copy, personalize names, adjust tone, and recommend optimal send times for each contact. The result? Higher open rates, more clicks, and campaigns that feel like one-on-one communication, without the manual work.

5. Cross-promote with local businesses.

One of the best ways to stand out on Small Business Saturday is by standing together. Partner with nearby businesses to create a “Shop Local Loop” or bundled offer that encourages customers to visit multiple stores. For example, a coffee shop could team up with a bookstore for a “Sip & Save” promotion, or a boutique could cross-promote with a salon for same-day styling and shopping discounts.

Use social media tags, shared email lists, and co-branded flyers to amplify reach. Thryv’s CRM and client insights make it easy to identify ideal partners and track referral sources, so you can see which collaborations actually generate leads and sales. This kind of cross-promotion not only drives more foot traffic but also strengthens community loyalty, something big-box retailers can’t replicate.

6. Track what’s working in real time.

Data is your best decision-maker on a busy retail weekend. Monitor performance metrics (like open rates, clicks, appointment bookings, and sales totals) throughout the day. If an email blast gets unusually high engagement, resend it with a stronger CTA. If a particular post or ad is generating strong conversions, consider boosting it with an extra budget. Minor adjustments in real-time can have a significant impact on overall results.

With Thryv’s real-time reporting dashboards, you can see which promotions, channels, and customer segments are performing best – —no spreadsheets or guesswork required. This visibility enables you to allocate your energy and budget more effectively, setting you up for even smarter marketing decisions in December and beyond.

7. Keep the momentum going after Saturday.

Your success on Small Business Saturday shouldn’t end when the doors close. Follow up with customers through thank-you emails, loyalty offers, or personalized “We appreciate you” messages. Share behind-the-scenes photos or testimonials on social media to keep the buzz alive. Offer a small incentive, such as 10% off their next visit or early access to holiday specials, to convert one-time shoppers into regulars.

Thryv makes it easy to automate these follow-ups using email or text, keeping your new customers engaged long after the event. You can also tag customers in your CRM to track future visits or purchases. The key is to turn every Small Business Saturday interaction into the start of a lasting relationship, and a foundation for continued sales growth.

Small Business Saturday isn’t just about one day of transactions; it’s about momentum. Every post, email, and in-store experience is an opportunity to deepen trust and strengthen relationships that last throughout the year. By following this checklist, you’ll not only increase visibility and sales but also lay the groundwork for repeat business and loyal customers.
